Translated as “universal spirit” (“Rei”) and “life energy” (“ki”), Usui Reiki is an ancient Tibetan-Buddhist healing modality. Despite being lost for some time, it was eventually rediscovered by Dr. Mikao Usui, a Buddhist priest and Japanese monk. To preserve the teachings, Dr. Usui trained several Reiki Masters; among them was Chujiro Hayashi, who continued his Reiki training even after Dr. Usui’s death. Dr. Hayashi also went on to train Hawayo Takata, a Japanese-American who brought Reiki to the United States and, over his lifetime, trained 22 Reiki Masters.
In 1991, Kathleen Milner, already an initiate of Reiki, had a consciousness-raising experience. She walked into the Otherworlds of Spirit, where Gautama Buddha used Kathleen’s natural abilities to provide her with Universal initiations to facilitate deeper healing. She received the golden elemental earth energy and 3 additional Reiki symbols during this initiation, thus sparking a new system that Kathleen was guided to birth and share with others.
Tera Mai Reiki is the school that I am trained in and practice. The golden elemental earth energy is a profoundly resonant energy that I was aware of long before receiving my training—it beautifully complements the universal life force of Reiki.
Tera Mai Reiki is a transformative and spiritually enriching practice that taps into the boundless wellspring of universal life force. This heart-centered healing art is wonderful at restoring balance to mind, body, and spirit. Guided by your intention, I channel divine universal and earth energy, directing it to areas that your highest self indicates need support, which can look like:
Please keep in mind that Tera Mai Reiki is not a substitute for professional counselling, medical treatment, or naturopathy. However, I am always happy to provide Tera Mai Reiki to complement and support such treatments.
1. A Reiki session begins with a brief discussion about what is present for you and what you’d like to focus on or leave the session with.
2. Once we connect to your intention, you’ll be invited to lie face up (fully clothed) on a massage table equipped with a pillow and blanket for comfort. You may also receive Reiki sitting in a chair if that is more comfortable for you.
3. Reiki will then be delivered in one of two ways:
4. I start at the head and work down to your feet, in appropriate areas only. We can also develop a combined touch/no-touch approach to accommodate your needs and personal boundaries. My practice tends to be quiet, but you can speak up anytime, especially if the treatment needs to be modified.
5. Halfway through the session, you can turn onto your stomach and continue with a similar pattern from head to foot.
6. Once we complete the energy session, we will have a follow-up discussion, where I share anything I noticed, intuited, or experienced. You are welcome to share your experience as well.
1. A distance Reiki session begins with a brief discussion on camera on Zoom (or via the phone if you prefer) about what is present for you and what you’d like to focus on or leave the session with.
2. Once we connect to your intention, you’ll be invited to move to a comfortable position. You may choose to lay down with a pillow and blanket, or remain sitting in a chair. You may wish to close your eyes. You will leave your microphone open so that you can communicate with me as needed. I will remain on camera (or on the phone) with my microphone open for the first few minutes. Music will be played softly through the computer, if Zoom is used.
3. I will guide you through a brief meditation for 1-2 minutes to help you relax into your physical and energetic space. Then I will let you know that the Reiki is beginning, and I will mute my microphone to ensure you have a peaceful experience.
4. Reiki will then be delivered. My practice tends to be quiet, but you can speak up anytime, especially if the treatment needs to be modified.
5. Once we complete the energy session, I will quietly say your name and invite you to sit up and move back to your computer (or pick up the phone). You may want to have some water on hand and have a few sips.
6. We will have a follow-up discussion, where I share anything I noticed, intuited, or experienced. You are welcome to share your experience as well.
Note: distance Reiki can also be delivered without the use of Zoom or a phone, and can be synchronously (a agreed up on time) or asynchronous. Please discuss what format is best for you.
The effects of Reiki are unique to every person, and can include:
While you may not notice a change during or immediately after your session, you might notice subtle shifts in the following days and weeks, as the Reiki energy will continue to flow for as long as is needed in your being.
